In all nine cases, actual assembly times were shorter than normed assembly times, corresponding to a mean work pace of 118% for entire automobiles and 125% for subassembly of doors according to the MTM standard. The work pace distributions for the nine automobiles video-recorded as well as for 36 doors are shown in Figure 8.7. Note the skewed work pace distribution with a large deviation which is typical for unpaced work by trained operators in agreement with findings from e.g. Dudley (1968). Note that door subassembly was carried out as a part of the total assembly work, i.e. the same operators in the work group performed both the work on the automobile body and that on the door subassembly stations. The diagram also shows that some groups had an extremely high work pace (140%-150%) on the specific doors video recorded.
